(PACE 6 HR) The Real Science of Heart Disease

OVERVIEW

In this lecture I scientifically call into question many of the conventional wisdom views of the heart and heart disease. I start by exploring how many scientists have shown that the heart is not a very effective pressure-propulsion pump like we are taught in medical school. I further solidify this argument using the research of Dr. Gerald Pollack of the University of Washington which shows why we don’t really need the heart to be a true pump. I then relate these conclusions to conditions like Congestive Heart Failure, Raynauds Syndrome, and varicose veins.

The second part of the talk is focused on the real causes of heart attacks. The work of Dr. Giorgio Baroldi and Dr. Knut Sroka have shown us that a blockage or clot formation, what is typically thought to cause a heart attack, accounts for a very small percentage of heart attacks. Further, there has been lots of research showing that dietary saturated fat and cholesterol have no correlation with heart disease. This begs the question of what does cause heart attacks. The true cause happens when very specific conditions are met, but it ultimately lies in an imbalance in the function of our Autonomic Nervous System. 

The presentation concludes by showing how we as chiropractors can use this information to use the tools we have (manipulation, supplements, and lifestyle) to help support our patients who have heart disease. It particularly focuses on the science behind how manual manipulation has on impact on the imbalance that drive heart disease.

Learning Objectives

My goal with this talk is to educate chiropractors about the true causes of heart disease, not so that we can say that we treat heart disease—because there are obvious reasons why we shouldn’t say that—but because our patients need our guidance in ways that they can create strong, healthy hearts. It is obvious that our western medical model is failing those with heart disease and people are starting to realize this and seek out alternative practitioners. If we chiropractors are armed with this knowledge, then we can be there to support our patients who are in this situation.

OVERVIEW FOR MANAGING PROPRIOCEPTIVE ISSUES Part 2

(PART TWO PROPRIOCEPTION)

Proprioception is an important bodily neuromuscular sense. It falls under our “sixth sense”, more commonly known as somatosensation. The term somatosensation is an all-encompassing term which includes the sub-categories of mechanoreception (vibration, pressure, and discriminatory touch), thermoreception (temperature), nociception (pain), equilibrioception (balance) and proprioception (sense of positioning and movement). The feedback from all these different sensory components arise from our PNS feeding information to our CNS, both at the level of the spinal cord (reflexive) and sent to the cerebral cortex for higher processing. People experiencing proprioceptive challenges are coming to chiropractic clinics with conditions related to MVAs, sports injuries, falls, developmental, or neurological issues.

This course will cover how to determine, and what may help with patients suffering from many types of proprioceptive conditions.

Proprioception is the perception of body position and movements in three-dimensional space, and overall proprioceptive performance is determined by the quality of both the available proprioceptive information and an individual’s proprioceptive ability. Thus, the hardware (peripheral mechanoreceptors) provides proprioceptive information to the brain for the software (central processing) to integrate and use.

This course is designed to give basic essential information needed to diagnosis and treat uncomplicated proprioceptive dysfunction and related disorders. After completing the seminar, we believe you will be equipped with the information needed to identify common clinical signs and symptoms of proprioceptive issues with your patients and incorporate an appropriate treatment.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

(PART ONE BALANCE)

According to the Vestibular Disorders Association, over 90 million Americans age 17 and older, have experienced a dizziness or balance problem at some point in their lives. Almost 8 million people in the US have a problem with balance that has lasted over 3 months and 2.5 million report a chronic dizziness problem. With the large amount of baby boomers entering “retirement age”, there is increased concern about falling. Most people over the age of 70 report some problem with dizziness and balance and balance-related falls account for more than one-half of the accidental deaths in the elderly. In addition, individuals with a diagnosed vestibular problem who also exhibit symptoms have an incidence of falling that is 12 times that of the general population. Overall, the cost of medical care for patients with balance disorders exceeds $1 billion per year in the US. Getting effective treatment is frequently complicated by the challenge of diagnosing the specific source of the problem and finding clinicians with the knowledge and experience to treat these problems.

This workshop will cover the anatomy, physiology and function of the vestibular system and the vestibular system’s important role in balance and mobility. It is designed to give basic essential information needed to assess and treat uncomplicated vestibular dysfunction as well as incidence, diagnosis and treatment of balance related disorders. Attendees will learn the various types of vestibular disorders, how they affect different populations and basic clinical tools for appropriate evaluation and treatment strategies.

This 6-hour presentation covers nutritional aspects that are neurologically driven covering such topics as brain health, pregnancy, stress, and aging concepts.  We will look at a variety of nutritional aspects in relation to different health issues.

Objectives

Participants will gain a better understanding of why it is important to include nutrition in their treatment plans.  We will discuss what should be considered in order to be better equipped to treat patients. Participants will have a better understanding on how to determine patient treatments and what those treatments should entail. More importantly, participants will understand why as a chiropractor addressing nutrition with patients is imperative.  Doctors will be empowered to improve their patients’ lives more wholly for a more complete future.

Overview

This course takes a look at where chiropractic comes from.  An in depth discussion of the origins and philosophical roots of what has become one of the largest natural health care branches in the world will be reviewed. We look at the history of chiropractic and how chiropractic philosophy fits into the modern day practice. We will take a brief look at some other healing art philosophies and see how they compare with our own.

OBJECTIVES

The student will have a better understanding regarding the importance of philosophy.  Every profession has a philosophy.  By participating in this class, the attendees will hopefully have a greater appreciation for ours.

  • Definition of philosophy and chiropractic philosophy
  • Interpret quotes from famous philosophers, chiropractic philosophers and excerpts from motivational and inspirational readings

Learn treatment protocols and implementation for adrenal glands, grief, insomnia, fever reduction, bladder incontinence, muscle spasms pitting edema, and night sweats. Learn an easy approach to pain reduction with the surrounding the Dragon technique.

Hour 4:  Learn treatment protocols and implementation for upper abdominal pressure, female reproductive issues, Carpal Tunnel syndrome, elbow pain, plantar fasciitis, migraines, headaches, supporting pregnancy. Learn the simple use of the Hua Tuo points, spinal treatment via auriculotherapy, Using Subcutaneous needles, and self- treatment protocols.

(PACE 4 HR) Chiropractic Adjusting Technique

Overview

This 4-hour presentation covers adjusting techniques that are neurologically based.  As a beginning to this seminar, we will cover neuroplasticity and the neurological basis of adjusting. We will also look at the arthrology of joints, as well as, mechanoreceptors, dorsal column, lateral columns, the anterolateral system and more.  Equilibrium will be examined along with the vestibular system.

Objectives

Participants will leave having a better understanding of how to adjust and treat patients.  Participants can also expect to acquire a better understanding of how to determine what the treatments should entail.  More importantly, doctors will have an understanding of why elements of their treatments were chosen.  Doctors will be empowered with a deeper knowledge to improve their patient’s lives, including their own.

Overview

Very few people enjoy record keeping so in an effort to make this less stressful for you there are no diagnosis codes.  After spending many years reviewing records, one of the areas I found most often lacking was Evaluation and Management coding which is based upon 7 components and effects your collections.  This two hour seminar was put together from the perspective of how to not only keep good records, but to help you get reimbursed, hopefully, better. We will cover such areas of record keeping from the concept of writing out your diagnosis and what advantages this may have for you.

One snapshot of examples we cover in this course is:

  • How are you going to separate, or properly diagnosis, a neuritis from a radiculopathy?
  • How would you separate neuropathy from a radiculitis?
  • All seven have their own diagnostic code where before they fit under one code. Did you order the appropriate tests?

We will also look at some key strategies to help keep the doctor and staff, as well as the patients, within those boundaries.

This 2-hour course takes a look at some of the mental health issues facing our veterans.  We will first talk about the children of veterans and some of the most common issues they may face, such as:  how long will they be effected, what can chiropractic do, and what types of treatments are available.  In other words, what can be some possible long term affects, if any, with the children of veterans.  We will also discuss the the potential impacts on spouses of veterans.

For both men and women, questions like the following will be discussed and answered during this 2-hour course:

  • What is PTSD and who, as well as how many, are effected?
  • How can PTSD affect a veteran?
  • How do we determine who has PTSD?
  • What exactly is MST?

Overview

This is a new 12-hour presentation covering phases of aging and care options from a case/patient management aspect.  In this class, we will cover adjusting styles for the entire spine, including protocols and safety issues related to caring for patients as they become older.  The aging population is larger in numbers than all other groups, and it will continue to grow. Expect to be equipped, empowered and have developed a more complete understanding of the aging experience.  The tools and skills presented in this course may help you to grow your practice with the older patient.

  • Possible conditions, prevention of conditions associated to aging (examples:  fall prevention, arthritis and osteoporosis)
  • Treatment options from a medicolegal aspect
  • Practical approaches to chiropractic care that may benefit the older patient

This is a 12-hour continuing education course.  It includes two of the hours dedicated to Record Keeping.  Each lesson takes 50 minutes to complete.  An assessment of your subject mastery will be tested with a short quiz periodically.  Upon completion of all 12 lessons, you will earn 12 CEU’s and a certificate will be provided to verify your completion of the program.

Overview

Attendees will gain a better understanding of what stress really is and how to more effectively work with stress.  Participants will become knowledgeable in how stress affects all aspects of a patient’s health. Properly recognizing and working with stress could be what is required for a quicker and more complete healing to occur.

The course will enlighten you to the five stress types:  chemical, psychological, social physical, physiological, and why the current treatment model is not working.

Stress is responsible for the initiation, perpetuation, and exacerbation of over 70 health conditions. Attendees will learn how stressors impact brain development and even alter brain function and structure making effective treatment vital for patients.  The program covers how this all comes about, and what chiropractic can do to help.

Objectives

Improve the chiropractor’s ability to better evaluate, diagnose, and treat conditions associated with, or affected by, chronic and acute stress.

(PACE 12 HR) Managing Patients With Concussion & Their Related Findings

 

Overview

Each year in the United States, there are an estimated 1.6 to 3.8 million sports-related brain injuries; 136,000 of which occur in young athletes in the course of high school sports.  Understanding the signs and symptoms of SRC and appropriate return-to-play recommendations is imperative to the safety of all athletes and young athletes in particular.  Doctors treating patients with suspected concussion need to be aware of the limitations of standard neuroimaging technologies regarding diagnosis and prognosis of concussion and advances that have been made in the field.

This course will include:

  • Addressing clinical assessment and management
  • Deeper understanding of the role neurocognitive testing is in returning athletes to school and play
  • Rehab treatment including assessment and treatment of cervical injuries
  • Vestibular and vision problems in concussion
  • Other important topics related to all concussion

This course takes a look at where chiropractic comes from.  An in depth discussion of the origins and philosophical roots of what has become one of the largest natural health care branches in the world will be reviewed. We look at the history of chiropractic and how chiropractic philosophy fits into the modern day practice. We will take a brief look at some other healing art philosophies and see how they compare with our own.  The need for chiropractic is growing and, therefore, we will look at the safety and effectiveness, or efficacy of chiropractic. Since we are talking chiropractic we will also include several hours of technique.

OBJECTIVES

The student will have a better understanding regarding the importance of philosophy.  Every profession has a philosophy.  By participating in this class, the attendees will hopefully have a greater appreciation for ours.  We will cover some of what the more recent research says about efficacy.  Four hours will be dedicated to technique.  Attendees will leave with at least one new technique to add to their art form.

  • Interpret quotes from famous philosophers, chiropractic philosophers and excerpts from motivational and inspirational readings

We will look at conditions and treatment options from both a medicolegal and practical approach. We will also discuss how chiropractic care may benefit these individuals.  This seminar will look at issues surrounding conditions associated with aging, such as fall prevention, arthritis and osteoporosis.  We will look at possible complications from a neurological aspect as well as structural.  Possible complications related to aging and a variety of conditions associated with aging will be reviewed.

Objectives

You will develop a better understanding of how to treat your patients and a better understanding on how to determine your treatments and what those treatments could entail. We will cover the patient care management from all aspects.  You will be empowered to change your patients’ lives for a more complete future.

(PACE 1 HR) Medical Marijuana Eligibility and Use

Overview

This is a one hour presentation on the use of medical marijuana.  It will cover some of the conditions being treated with cannabis. This course also includes discussion about some of the differences of medical marijuana use from state to state.  We will look at some research that may give insight as to why patients may want to try this alternative approach.

Some questions that will be discussed and evidence-based research reviewed are:

  • Will this be able to help with the opioid crisis?
  • What are cannabinoids?
  • Are people with health- and age-related problems more vulnerable to marijuana’s risks?
  • What medications contain cannabinoids?
  • We will look at why THC may not be good for children, teens, or in actuality anyone under 25 years of age.
  • Have you ever heard of marijuana use disorders?
  • Can endocannabinoid-directed reorganization of the brain during puberty really occur?

(PACE 1 HR) Manual Therapies for Chronic Pain Management of Patients During Opioid Crisis

Overview

This is a one hour presentation looking at some alternative methods of working with patients with chronic pain.  Some examples include:  acupuncture, aroma therapies, and chiropractic.  We will discuss data that shows opioid prescriptions quadrupled in a very short time despite that there was no overall increase in pain reported by Americans.  Opioids are now killing more people than wars, and manual pain-relief therapies could be a solution to changing that statistic.

We will discuss exercise and routines that work best.  There will be a brief review on the neurology of pain, and, more importantly, how chiropractic can impact the neurology of pain.

(PACE 1 HR) Lyme Disease

Overview

Lyme Disease course is a one hour presentation introducing you to Lyme disease. In this presentation you will see that this disease is grossly under reported and is much more prevalent than most realize.  We will look at where Lyme disease started, what causes it and how it progresses.  People often want to know if there is any hope once they have this disease.  Therefore, we will discuss treatment options, preventative steps, available tests and which labs are best.  A brief tutorial will be provided on how to properly remove a tick, because it if is done improperly it may result in the person being infected.  In addition, we will discuss what a biofilm is and why Lyme disease may be so hard to treat.
